Intense Pulsed Light Therapy - IPL

Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL) is a non-invasive procedure that uses scattered wavelengths of light to target the deep dermal layer of skin, providing an enhanced natural skin tone that radiates with clarity and smoothness.

What does IPL treat?

IPL may be used to improve the appearance of common skin concerns such as:

  • Sun spots and other discoloration
  • Uneven pigmentation and redness
  • Visible small blood vessels and spider veins
  • Fine lines and uneven skin texture
  • Some acne-related discoloration
  • Unwanted hair in selected treatment areas

Results and suitability vary. The device, skin tone, hair color, and concern being treated all affect the plan; a consultation helps determine appropriate options.

Prior to Treatment:

  • Discuss your medical history, skin conditions, recent tanning or sun exposure, and all medications and skin products with your provider.
  • Follow the clinic’s personalized preparation instructions. Arrive with clean skin; avoid makeup, lotions, or fragranced products on the treatment area unless your provider advises otherwise.
  • Do not stop prescription or over-the-counter medication on your own. Ask your prescribing clinician and IPL provider whether any adjustment is appropriate.
  • Tell your provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of abnormal scarring, or recently had another skin procedure; they can advise whether treatment should be delayed or modified.

Treatment:

Your provider cleans the treatment area and uses an IPL handpiece to deliver pulses of light. Protective eyewear is worn. You may feel brief warmth or a snapping sensation. Treatment time and comfort measures depend on the area and your individual plan; your provider will explain what to expect before beginning.

Post-treatment

  • Temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling can occur. Follow your clinician’s aftercare instructions and contact the clinic if a reaction concerns you.
  • Use gentle skin care and sun protection as directed. Protect treated skin from direct sun and avoid tanning while it heals.
  • Ask your provider when to resume makeup, active skin-care products, exercise, hot tubs, or activities that may irritate the area.

IPL Results are:

  • IPL may improve the appearance of uneven tone, sun spots, redness, and some visible signs of aging.
  • Improvement is gradual and varies from person to person.
  • Your provider will discuss expected results and possible risks for your skin and treatment plan.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of sessions needed to achieve optimal results with IPL photofacials can vary based on individual skin concerns and treatment goals. Typically, a series of three to six sessions, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, are recommended to achieve optimal results. Maintenance sessions may be necessary to sustain the effects.
